Caheragh
Church Records |
| |
Skibbereen Heritage Centre has
undertaken to create a database of the
Caheragh Roman Catholic Church Vital Records.
This is a welcome addition to its current
database which now covers the Parishes of
Skibbereen, Rath and the Islands, Drinagh and
Drimoleague. As with the other Parishes, this
will be a long, slow process but, while the
project is underway, we can answer genealogy
requests relating to Caheragh. The addition of
Caheragh will facilitate many searches,
especially those from overseas who may not
know exactly where their ancestor was
baptised.

Jasper
Wolfe Book Party |
| |
There was a gathering of the
Wolfe family and friends on Saturday night
last here at the Heritage Centre. Jasper
Ungued-Thomas, the author of the book on his
grandfather Jasper Wolfe of Skibbereen, invited
all those who had helped him in the research
of the book to a party and a lot of the Wolfe
family travelled from overseas to attend the
event. A wonderful night was had by all and
the book is an excellent read. Jasper Wolfe
was a successful solicitor in Skibbereen for
many years through turbulent times and the
book is the story of his remarkable life and
also of Skibbereen. Published by Collins Press

Post
Heritage Week...... |
| |
Heritage Week events in Skibbereen
kicked off to a spectacular start in Lough
Hyne despite truly awful weather conditions.
Dr Rob McAllen, Dr Mark Jessop and Eoin O’Gorman,
all UCC scientists, presented touch tanks with
species from Lough Hyne and observers were
able to see and touch these marine creatures
while the scientists gave a talk on their
characteristics. Lough Hyne is Europe’s
first statutory Marine Nature Reserve and is
the most studied site of its size in
Europe
so it was an appropriate setting for this
educational event. Common and purple sea
urchins, scallop, common, bloody henry and
brittle star fish and other marine animals
were handled by the spectators while the
scientists explained their biological make up
and feeding habits. Over the 2 hours of the
event a large, wet but very enthusiastic,
crowd were entertained and educated at this
event.
Karl and Leah Bredendieck of Skibbereen based
'Remote Presence' put their R.O.V. (remotely
operated vehicle- a robotic underwater camera
system), into the lake in conjunction with the
UCC event. People queued to see the video
monitors onshore which showed live coverage as
the R.O.V. made its way along the bed of the
lake. Viewers were fascinated to see what was
underwater in Lough Hyne and Karl was on hand
to explain the process. Such was the demand to
see this normally hidden facet of Lough Hyne,
Karl and Leah demonstrated for almost 4 hours
despite being soaked to the skin.
Following this another hardy crew of
participants turned up in the pouring rain to
collect litter in Lough Hyne and its environs.
Members of
Skibbereen
Tidy
Towns
and Skibbereen Rowing Club got drenched in
their worthy endeavour and were joined by Seán
and Mark of Russagh Mill and Jim and Neil of
Atlantic Sea Kayaking. Terri from Skibbereen
Heritage Centre along with Mary Browne and her
son from
Baltimore
made up the crew, overall collecting 22 bags
of litter.
Skibbereen Heritage Centre, the organiser
of these events, would like to commend all the
participants in this day’s events for
turning up in rain and gale to enable these
worthwhile events to go ahead. Most people
went home dripping wet but happy as the day
was an extremely pleasant one in spite of the
adverse weather conditions.
Other events in the week were very well
attended. James MacEoin and friends played a
variety of musical instruments (uilleann
pipes, flute and violin) every lunch time in
the Courtyard of Skibbereen Heritage Centre.
James was kind enough to perform for longer
than advertised most days such was the demand
from the audience.
Later in the week Nic Slocum, who runs a
marine wildlife watching operation along the
West Cork
coast, gave an illustrated talk at Skibbereen
Heritage Centre on the Whales and Dolphins of
West Cork. A very appreciative audience
watched fascinating video footage of
cetaceans, filmed from Nic’s boat, and this
was followed by an informative and
entertaining slide show. Nic kindly stayed on
for a considerable time after the talk to
answer questions from the very enthusiastic
audience.
The following night saw Skibbereen Theatre
Society presented its pageant ‘The Boldest
Fenian Man’ on the life and times of
Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa in the Courtyard of
Skibbereen Heritage Centre. Frank McCarthy’s
performance as Rossa, the esteemed
locally-born revolutionary, had the audience
enthralled while Con Downing gave an excellent
presentation as the narrator. This
well-written pageant covered the life of Rossa
in a succinct and entertaining 25 minute
performance and finished with Brendan McCarthy
giving a rendition of the song, ‘A Nation
Once Again’ while the audience joined to
give a stirring finale to the performance.
William Casey followed the following night
with an illustrated talk on genealogy at
Skibbereen Heritage Centre. The humorous and
informative slide show gave the steps of how
to go about tracing your family tree and some
of the common pitfalls that researchers
encounter when carrying out this gratifying
endeavour. Many people took notes and William
gave handouts and answered numerous queries
from the audience, staying on for a
considerable time after the talk to do so.
Skibbereen Heritage Centre’s open day on
Saturday was very busy with a lot of local
people calling in to see what the Centre is
about. Skibbereen Historical Walks was the
final event of the week, with Margaret Murphy
guiding a large crowd around the streets of
Skibbereen and its history.
Skibbereen Heritage Centre would like to
sincerely thank all participants for giving
their time and expertise to celebrate Heritage
Week. Such a successful week of events clearly
demonstrates how much we love and cherish our
West Cork
heritage.

lake for all of his life and his knowledge and
love of the area was well known. As a
caretaker at the Reserve, he met and
befriended many of the marine biologists over
the years and the Bohane Laboratory was named
in his honour. We offer our deepest sympathies

31st of August 2007 |
| |
Heritage Week events kicked off on a
beautiful sunny day at Lough Hyne, near
Skibbereen, with a series of well attended,
fun events organised by Skibbereen Heritage
Centre.
Dr Rob McAllen, Dr John Davenport and Eoin
O’Gorman of the Department of Zoology in UCC
brought in species in touch tanks to the North
Pier and a large crowd gathered to see and
handle these creatures. Lough Hyne is
Europe
’s first statutory Marine Nature Reserve and
is the most studied site of its size in the
world so it was an appropriate setting for
this educational event. Dr McAllen sprayed
some of the unsuspecting audience with a sea
squirt raising laughs all around, while
explaining how this bizarre looking creature
was the closest relative to humans in the
tanks. Common and purple sea urchins, scallop,
common, bloody henry and brittle star fish
were handled by the observers while the
scientists explained their biological make up
and feeding habits. Risking the loss of his
finger while the audience dissolved in peals
of laughter, Dr McAllen explained how a velvet
swimming crab attacks its prey and showed how
to determine the sex of a crab using the more
docile edible crab as an example. Over the 2
hour period of the lecture, approximately 100
people were entertained and educated at this
event.
Following this, Skibbereen Tidy Towns members
gave of their time and energy to collect 22
bags in their Caring for Lough Hyne litter
pick. Local residents, the Crockett and Keena
families also lent a hand while kayakers, Seán
and Claire from Russagh Mill Adventure Centre,
scoured the shoreline. The bags were collected
by Cork County Council after this successful
event.
Skibbereen Historical Walks gave a free
escorted historical walking tour to 20 people
that evening. Covering the history of
Ireland
using the medium of Skibbereen’s streets,
Margaret Murphy also answered questions and
covered the famous historical figures from the
area.
The following week saw two further events at
Skibbereen Heritage Centre – Monday night an
illustrated talk ‘Invasive Aliens’ and
Thursday night a talk on Margaret ‘Tommy’
Warren.
‘Invasive Aliens’ covered the invasive
flora and fauna that are causing problems to
the habitats, flora and fauna of
West Cork
. Declan O’Donnell of the National Parks and
Wildlife Service covered such species as the
japanese knotweed, zebra mussels and american
mink, showing slides of these creatures and
the damage that they can do. Now the second
largest threat to biodiversity, these
introduced species can also impact the
economy, e.g. zebra mussel’s effects in the
US
estimated to cost $5 billion. Some of the
species, for example the giant hogweed
commonly found around
West Cork
, can also cause medical damage if handled.
The giant hogweed is highly irritating and can
result in hospitalisation and permanent
sensitivity to the sun. Other creatures, such
as the mitten crab and japanese knotweed, can
damage foundations of buildings causing
structural damage. Other potential financial
impacts include damage to farming when
new zealand
flatworms deplete indigenous earthworms,
damage to boats from zebra mussels and damage
to marine environments from japanese wireweed.
A lively question and answer session followed
and Declan got an appreciative round of
applause from the audience.
The final event of the week was a talk on
Margaret Warren given by Peter Murray of the
Crawford Gallery. A crowd of about 50 turned
up to hear and remember the story of this
fascinating woman’s life. Born in
Texas
, she was one of the first female pilots in
the
US
and was a pioneering figure in an era when
women were mostly excluded from such pursuits.
She went on to marry into a prominent
Boston
family and tales of her exploits had the
audience in break into laughter. She came to
live in Castletownhend later in life and
established the
Warren
Gallery
. Art was always very important to her and
here in
West Cork
, she fostered artistic talent while also
painting herself. Some of the audience also
recounted their memories of this dynamic woman
and it was obvious that she was much loved and
respected in the area. Peter Murray’s
admiration of his subject was obvious and
again, the audience showed its appreciation
with prolonged applause.
Skibbereen Heritage Centre would like to
sincerely thank all participants for giving
their time and efforts so freely to celebrate
Heritage Week.

Skibb Woman on The Moon |
| |
Skibbereen Credit
Union has kindly sponsored a panel on Agnes
Clerke (1842-1907), a facinating Skibbereen
woman, who has a crater on the moon named in
her honour, Clerke's Crater located
near the Sea of Serenity.
Her father, John W. Clerke, was manager
of the Skibbereen branch of the Provincial
Bank in Bridge Street and was one of the
founding members of the Relief Committee
during the time of the Famine. He was also a
keen astronomer and used a telescope with a
chronograph to supply a time service for the
town of Skibbereen. Agnes inherited her father's love
of astronomy and took it up seriously at the
age of 11.
She published several books on
astronomy and was highly regarded by her
peers. Skibbereen Heritage Centre is grateful
to the Credit Union for sponsoring this panel
to commemorate the anniversary of this
extraordinary woman.
